Shared decision-making ensures that individuals are supported to make clinical decisions that are right for them. It is a joint process where the health care professional supports the patient to reach a decision about their treatment.
The conversation brings together:
- the clinician’s expertise/treatment options, evidence, risks and benefits
- what the patient knows best: their preferences, personal circumstances
When you attend an appointment with a health care professional, you will want to discuss your treatment options.
The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System have developed a useful card to encourage you to Ask Four Questions.
You might want to use the card to help you to make personal choices and come to a shared decision with your health care professional about the best outcome for you.
